The way a person views your company goes beyond the type of service you offer or even how well you do the job.

A dentist is a good example of this, and one I’ve used before, because I think it reflects the situation so perfectly.

What do you see when you enter a dentist’s office? For the dentist I go to, I see plush chairs lining the walls, all of them well decorated and comfortable. I see paintings on the wall, and an aquarium in the corner with a variety of interesting fish.

I see greeting cards on the counter along with various plants in the corner and a fan slowly turning overhead. The wallpaper is nicely designed, and often there is music playing.

All of this immediately puts me at ease and in a better mood. What does any of this have to do with dental work? It doesn’t have a single thing to do with it.

A dentist who pays for greeting card printing isn’t by default a better dentist, but this will be a dentist who understands the importance of atmosphere and how it impacts people.

The fact is, you can be the best dentist in the world, but if your office looks shabby and thrown together, if it looks cold and sterile, people are going to start to avoid you. Your service might be enough to draw a certain amount of people in, but the first impression they’ll receive is of a cheap, poorly done waiting room that breeds apprehension rather than comfort.

You need great service in any type of service industry job to really make it big, but you also need to be able to give people an environment that they enjoy.

Part of this will be the furniture you pick, the greeting card printing you get done, and other small details that make a person immediately feel at home in a place. Sometimes all it takes is a few small plants to spruce up an environment and make people immediately feel comfortable in it.

The reason why I used dentists as a prime example is because of how much tension people already have when they need to see a dentist. Other service industry jobs will be less extreme than this, which means you’ll have a little more room to work, but you still need to give people something comfortable.

The more thrown together a waiting room is the less professional a person comes across and the less trust people will immediately have in you. This is the first thing people are going to see about you and will make judgments based on how you handle it.

So make sure that your waiting room is the best it can be. Be sure that the first sight people have is a good one.
