Online CPR: Take a Deep Breath

For many years, the old method of CPR deep breathing along with chest compressions has been trained all CPR classes for the amateur and expert medical professional.

But the times are changing. We no longer require this method. CPR has become more efficient in emergency setting. Doctors and started to ask if we can eliminate deep breathing during a rescue. Remember when we stopped checking for a pulse years ago?

This change has its detractors. However, we have been helped by 2 new reports by the AJM (American Journal of Medicine in 04.2006) and The Lace. The AHA (American Hart Assoc) changes their guild lines in ’08 due to these studies as well.

The reports looked at deep breathing and non-breathing into the victim and found an increase or nearly 100% in chance of survival.

This is understandable with a life on the line.

However, these changes make CPR a little easier for the layperson by removing moth to mouth breathing along with cress compressions. This way of performing CPR is somewhat complicated to the non-trained medical professional. In a emergency setting this can increase the risk of misunderstanding and miss use of proper CPR.

Based on the new studies all deep breathing mouth to mouth has been removed from the CPR practice and we are teaching just chest compressions.

Base on factual findings, things are changing in the CPR world. However, we must also look at the personal side of things. Would your average everyday person on the street be more inclined to jump in and help without the risk of such close personal contact?
During a poll the majority of Americans would like to help without putting themselves in a perceived risk. Thus, compression only falls into this category.

Please make an important note: “Hands Only” is not to be used for a drowning victim.
This new hands only is for the non-medical and untrained person.
